A brief history of the T-Shirt

The T-Shirt is such an iconic, classic piece that it is probably the most popular wearable garment going. But have you ever wondered where it has originated from?
Traditionally it was always considered as an underwear garment and was never really seen in public. This underwear garment started as a one piece union suit that was worn by workers in the 19th century to keep them warm. The T-shirt was then created when people would cut this union suit in half, leaving the top part long enough to tuck into their bottoms.
It wasn't until the U.S Navy issued T-shirts that they went from being a cut up union suit to the aptly named T-shirt where it got the iconic name from its shape resembling the letter "T". The T-shirt soon 'cottoned' on and was used by many workers such as farmers and miners particularly in the hot, summer months.
It wasn't until around 1940 that the printed tee was born. It's thought the first one was for promoting the film The Wizard of Oz and many then copied on.
Peoples attitude towards the T-shirt really changed though thanks to Marlon Brando in the 50's where he made the tee 'sexy & cool'. Sales of these tight, bicep caressing t-shirts went through the roof. It goes to show even then how much of an influence someone in the public eye had an impact on fashion.
Since then they have gone on to be one of the most sold garments in the world with an estimated 2 billion tees sold worldwide every single year. We contribute to a very small percentage of that but we do have a great selection for you to choose from with different cuts, prints and material. Check them all out here.
